“Style is knowing who you are …”

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Gore Vidal

I’ve seen lots of articles about writing or art style and finding your authentic voice. All the advice boils down to building a volume of work. The more you put onto paper or canvas, the more you see what you have to say and how you want to say it.

Keep putting one word or image after another on your paper and don’t give a damn if it is “right” or “pretty” or “interesting.” Just do your thing over and over and see what emerges. The more you do, the more you will see your unique style shining through, your unique experience reflected on the paper. The more you see your own style, the more confidence it will give you to not give a damn and keep going.

We get to know ourselves through our art and writing and eventually, when we have a volume of work, we will be confident and fearless enough to let others get to know us through our art and writing. But first we need to make the art and do the writing, and keep making and doing it.

What do you want to say?
