Why creativity makes you crazy

Here is a chicken/egg problem: Does creativity make us crazy, or are we creative because we’re crazy?

I will provide my own definition of “crazy,” that crazy creatives think and act differently than people in the “mainstream.” I think we can all get behind that definition.

The “mainstream” thinks were crazy. Why spend all that money on paint and canvases or musical instruments? Why spend countless hours pouring our hearts out into novels and poems and art and song?

Why not?

For us crazy creatives, being creative keeps us sane. If we don’t fly our creative freak flags, an internal part of us dies a little each day. “Mainstream” life isn’t enough for us. We need brighter colors, bolder statements, complicated harmonies. We want more out of life. “Mainstream” doesn’t give us more, so we have to make it ourselves.

Get crazy and do something creative today. You’ll feel more sane afterward. Other creatives will applaud you and be inspired. “Mainstream” people may not get it, because they can’t handle more. But as Anais Nin said, “Had I not created my whole world, I would certainly have died in other people’s.”
