Art is a wonderful tool for processing emotions. Through creativity, we can preserve a fond memory or emotion, and we can work through difficult times.
My theme for this month is “feelings in art.” I want to celebrate the good and process the difficult. Like the April showers, I want to feel cleaner and rejuvenated at the end of the month.
It can be as simple as coloring. Get one of those “adult” coloring books and pick a random image. Think of a difficult emotion and what colors go with it, then use those colors on your page. Allow yourself to feel sad, angry, cry, etc.
When you’re done or come to a point when you feel done, stop, have a cup of tea or some fresh air, then pick a second random image. Think of an emotion you want to cultivate (peace, joy, forgiveness) and what colors go with it, then use those colors on your second page. Allow yourself to feel that new emotion as you color.
After this exercise, consider doing a little journaling to consciously process how it felt to color each page.
When was the last time you consciously worked through emotions in your creativity?
