Creativity Dis-ease 4: Restricted Art Diet

This month, we’re talking about the “Restricted Art Diet.” Can you relate?

You feel dry and uninspired. You can’t even think about your art. Your well is empty and you feel like you have nothing creatively to give.

Similar to your food choices affecting your health, what you’re exposed to creatively can affect your creative health. If you eat too much junk food, you can feel sluggish and lacking energy. And if you watch too much mindless television or read superficial magazines or tabloids, you can feel dull creatively.

The trick for this creativity dis-ease is to get more variety in your art “diet.” Feast on art in different mediums; read a novel, watch a foreign film, listen to instrumental music, visit a museum, look through a craft magazine or photographic coffee-table book. Take in lots of creative input: words, sounds, colors, textures, patterns, moods; all the art vitamins.

By feasting regularly on a variety of art sources, you fill your conscious mind with ideas and inspiration, which your subconscious mind can chew on to make art of your own.
