Self-care: Mindfulness Check-in

Coach Blog 030716 mindfulness checkin Last week, I proposed March Mindfulness and said, “A mindfulness practice can be whatever you want it to be, you just need to take a little time to notice what is going on within and around you. You don’t need to do anything with what you notice, but it’s all about having a choice, being able to choose if and how you respond, rather than going reactively through life.”

So let’s brainstorm some simple check-in practices so you have some options in mind. Try a few and keep what works. These practices create the space, then you can take five minutes to notice and choose.

* Tune in with a cup of tea or glass of water. As you sip, turn your attention inward.
* Meditate by following your breath in and out for 12 repetitions.
* Doodle spirals or loops or anything repetitive and let your mind wander.
* Rock out to a favorite song and then sit quietly for a few minutes.
* Stretch your neck and shoulders.
* Take a walk without your mp3 player.
* Do a favorite yoga pose or three.
* Text or message a friend for a mutual check-in minute.
* Slowly rub your favorite lotion on your hands or feet.
* What other ideas do you have to share?

Make a list of 3-5 different practices so you have some options to choose how you check in. It’s all about creating space to notice if we’re making the choices we want or if we are reacting without consciousness. Having a short list of mindfulness practices can help you create more space for choice.
