Coach nibble: Environmental Stress

Coach Blog 010114 Today’s coach nibble comes from anonymous: “A few weeks ago, you asked us to think about ‘what environment would nurture you’ and I was very frustrated by that question. I don’t like the town where I’m living and want to leave but can’t because of finances. How can I make lemonade out of a lemony environment?”

I can definitely relate to this issue. For 15 years, I’ve wanted to move to New York City. I haven’t done it for various reasons and one of the major reasons was money. Finally, within the last six months or so, I decided to turn it up to fate – that if I’m meant to live in NYC, there isn’t anything I can do to stop it from happening; and since it hasn’t happened yet, that means there is still something for me to do here in Denver. Maybe meet someone, or learn something, or see something; who knows. But shifting my perspective in this way has gotten me to interact more with my Denver environment. I’m looking for a new place to live. I’m going out to meet-up groups around town, meeting new people, trying new restaurants, and doing new things. I’m engaging more with my environment rather than resisting it, and I’m enjoying it more than the previous 9 years I lived here.

I won’t ask you to analyze why you don’t like where you’re living, but I encourage you to engage more with your environment and see if that helps. It’s maybe easier to do living near a city, like I do, because there are more options of things to do; but, even in a rural or suburban environment, you can keep your eyes and ears open. Maybe there’s a little park or nature trail to explore; or maybe you could start some small-talk with your local librarian or produce seller. Look for opportunities of engagement and open to the possibility that your environment has something for you.

What do you think about this advice? I’d love to know them in the comments or on Facebook!
