Last year, on Halloween, I shared the concept of Hungry Ghosts. This post was pretty popular, so I wanted to revisit it.
My conclusion last year was as follows: “So stretch yourself, challenge yourself, set wonderful goals; but remember that you are not your goals, you are not your projects. You can be complete and happy just as you are.”
It’s difficult to remember this if you put a lot of yourself in your work. If you paint something you’re extremely proud of but the prints aren’t selling on your website. If you write something you feel is exceptional but it keeps getting rejected for publication. If you love helping people and start a healing business but you don’t know how to attract customers. It all can feel like personal rejection.
However, I’ll say again, you are not your projects. You won’t connect deeply with everyone you meet. Every visitor to your website or shop won’t connect deeply with what you do or make.
The important thing is that you connect deeply with what you do or make. If you love what you do, it will shine through your work and that light will attract the right people when they find you. Paint for yourself; write for yourself; heal yourself; keep showing up for yourself.
A Hungry Ghost is an empty vessel craving to be full. But other people can’t fill you up; if you depend on other people to make you feel complete, you are giving your power away. Know that you are full. You are complete. Your work is beautiful. Your goals are taking shape. Keep showing up for yourself and, sooner or later, other people will show up to see your light.
