Invoke an Archetype

A few weeks ago, I posted about finding a coach. One of the low-cost suggestions I had was to read something by your favorite motivational author and asking yourself what he/she might say about your issue.

Another, similar tool is to invoke an archetype. An archetype is a personification of energy symbolizing qualities you want to emulate. Even if you are atheist or don’t believe in intuition, you can invoke this kind of guide.

Coach Blog 061013 A good example of archetypes are the seven faces of god in George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire book series (also known as Game of Thrones). They are the Father, the Mother, the Warrior, the Crone, the Smith, the Maid, and the Stranger. Many of these names alone bring to mind a certain set of qualities, although they may differ for each person considering them. For some people, the Father is a kind teacher; for others, he is a disciplinarian.

Decide what qualities would help you with a project or issue and find an archetype who has those qualities for you. Here are some examples:

* Wisdom – Albert Einstein
* Confidence – Bette Davis
* Passion – Marlon Brando
* Conviction – Susan B. Anthony
* Overcoming odds – Beethoven
* Wit – Jane Austen

Pick whatever archetype appeals to you and think of him/her when you have a problem.
What advice would he/she have for your issue?
